Five on Friday | Good Things.

Happy Friday, friends. I hope you’re finding some Good Things to celebrate this week … here are five of mine. Thing One. The Polar Coat. It’s finished. It fits. It’s warm. I’ve worn it lots. and I LOVE it. Lydia took some photos when we met up for coffee last Friday. This might be my favorite indoor FO backdrop ever – the lobby of a nearby hotel and yes, that is a horse, coming through a wall of grass. The pockets are one of my favorite things about this sweater (well, aside from all those things I said already). I am so glad I included them!I wasn’t sure about the longer…

    Monday Merriment.

It seemed like I enjoyed a full month’s worth of merry this past weekend, and yesterday … seemed like a full week’s worth! I went with my mom to sign the final paperwork and pick up her keys (eeep!! we start moving in today!) Then we went to Target (first of many trips, I’m sure). After I dropped her back at my sister’s, I raced home, cleaned up, did laundry and showered and drove to Katie’s. We had front row seats for Charlie’s Holiday Program! waiting for his class’ turn to perform Charlie did not sing, but he was very good at standing in a straight line. Charlie is just…

FO Friday | Hoping for Spring.

Yes, I finally got back to my knitting, and even finished something! But before I tell you about that, let me first share this. I hosted bookclub last night and finally got to bed (after maybe a glass of wine too many) this morning. Right now, I’m sitting at the counter in my yoga clothes. with my third cup of coffee. My good plans to put together an outfit and show you this lovely piece on me…not gonna happen today! But this is the blog post I have, so I’m going with  it! I started this cowl back in February, just as the temperatures began to warm and buds and…

    and now about reading.

…last night I had the very fun experience of a first bookclub meeting. It was organized by a friend of a friend who just moved here and had enjoyed a bookclub in her old neighborhood. She invited a few neighbors, and mothers of her kids’ classmates, my friend and me. Nine of us met and over dinner and drinks got to know each other (well kind of, I’m still not sure of everyone’s name!) The group is diverse in terms of age and background which always makes for good discussion. and yikes! I think I’m the oldest (and I know I have the oldest children.) It was rather fun to…

    holiday bookclub.

…one of my favorite december traditions is hosting holiday bookclub. we don’t discuss a book, but there is still plenty of conversation. and food. and wine. which is really what our bookclub is all about! thank you, katie, for a great photo! (click to see who’s who)

    bookclub at shari’s.

…we discussed the help (kay’s pick from last month – the one I missed to go to hunt valley). the overwhelming consensus was first – we loved the book – and second – sadly, like so many others we’ve read with themes of racism – it’s still too much with us – not only here in the south, but everywhere. we used this discussion guide and I think it did a great job to surface the bad, the ugly, the good and the really funny. none of us thought hilly was a great mother (question #2). you can’t be a bad person and be a good mother. and almost all of us…

…evidently I am the easiest person in the world to surprise – not that I don’t pay attention or notice things. more that I just was completely. totally. not expecting a party for me yesterday! karen, lydia and sara schemed and planned, along with my bookclub friends to surprise me. they succeeded! and it was so much fun – great food (of course), plenty of wine (of course) and the list of thank you notes I need to write is getting way out of hand. paula had my camera and got some great shots of me opening a huge pile of gifts. thought this might be a perfect time to try…

    holiday bookclub (day 16).

…I think I say this every time we meet, but I still can’t believe we’ve been together ten years (next month we’ll start year 11) and going strong! especially pleased this year to get one good group shot (thank you, sara!) and three good candids – because my selection of photo templates is still pretty limited and these fit great! mindy terasawa’s I believe and christmas dreams paper and elements, katie pertiet’s stacked photos and ali edwards holiday title block and 31 day circle number

    unaccustomed earth.

(visit flickr to see who’s who – and know that I take great pleasure in having “editorial license” here…after all I was the one with the camera, absolutely committed to getting a photo, and it was my birthday 🙂 thank you to everyone else for playing along with me!) …I felt so stupid asking vanessa about the title of the book. she said “oh, it was at the very beginning” and I said “oh, I guess I missed it”. [note to self – do not do this often – it’s not good!] and she read it for the group: Human nature will not flourish, any more than a potato, if…
