    the homestretch.

…yep, four weeks from today, the 2011 2-day walk will be a memory. and if this year is anything like the others, we’ll be sore, but smiling, grateful for the support of our family and friends who helped us raise a significant amount of money for an extremely worthwhile cause. this month, we took our 2nd training walk at the big creek greenway in alpharetta. it’s a wonderful facility. for the record, we only saw one snake (and honestly, I’m not sure we really saw it – fortunately there was plenty of warning and I think we both managed to look the other way while we carefully walked past it).…

    doing the 2.

this is our donation page – $2,500 to go! …as in the atlanta 2-day walk for breast cancer. karen and I have signed up again (this will be her 6th year and my 5th – wow!) and pledged to raise $2,500. the walk is september 24 and 25, but the fundraising deadline is august 27th. we hit our $2,500 goal last year on the day of the walk – which was in october. we’re hoping we can meet our goal ahead of the walk this year. and based on the generous support of our friends and family, we think it’s doable! I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the…

    the handoff.

mary, dawn, karen…and the quilt! …I think we were all amazed at how quickly we managed to set a date to handoff the quilt (less than a week seems like a minor miracle with three busy women). but we managed it last night – and had a great time with dawn. we met at tara humata and enjoyed sitting outside, drinking margaritas, eating chips and guacamole and these really cheesy yummy fajita nachos (sorry no photos, you’ll just have to imagine the goodness!) and talking. we’ve known dawn for years – I think we both have daughters who babysat for dawn when she was a brand new mama (and that…

    and the winner is.

…karen & I finally managed to get together wednesday evening to draw for the quilt. we really wanted to do it the old fashioned way. with slips of paper in a bowl. each $25 donated for our walk got one slip of paper in the bowl. there were 102 slips in total, representing the 32 donors and $2,600 raised. karen drew (I took the pictures!) we were nervous. but felt good that no matter who was selected, it would be someone special. …and the winner is… we’ve traded emails – since dawn lives nearby, we’d really like to present the quilt in person. (you can imagine the scheduling difficulties this might pose,…

    we did the 2.

…as in the atlanta 2-day walk for breast cancer. karen and I. 30 miles walking through atlanta, seeing our beautiful city. too many photo opportunities (early on sunday, my camera’s memory card was full – and I had to ration photos for the rest of the walk. seriously, I need a new memory card!!). for a truly wonderful cause. 1. at the finish line, 2. we’re doing the 2 for lisa b, 3. day 1 setting out, 4. sunlit skyline, 5. day 1 b’rest stop 3A, 6. day 1 lunch (with socks), 7. freedom parkway, 8. the celebratory beer (with socks), 9. the crew, 10. day 2 setting out, 11.…

    doing the 2.

…as in the atlanta 2-day walk for breast cancer. karen and I signed up for the 2010 walk last fall – as soon as registration opened (on the 2nd day of the 2009 walk). yes, the event is that inspiring and the organization it supports is that worthwhile. in its first seven years, It’s the Journey, Inc., who sponsors the walk, has raised $6.6 million and award 107 grants to local breast cancer organizations in the greater atlanta area. last year alone, they awarded a record $1 million to local breast cancer organizations that provide diagnosis, education, support and research on behalf of thousands of atlanta-area men, women and children affected by the…

    in training.

…karen & I had great plans to participate in the official 2 day training walk yesterday, but those plans fell through (imagine a puddle of water in my basement, ruined cardboard boxes and a bit of very wet carpet…I had to be home to wait for a visit from the air conditioning repairman). instead, we did training on our own. four laps at hembree park. enjoying the sights and sounds of almost summer – baseball, concession stand grilling, honeysuckle, a band at the church that backs up to the trail and finally, enough sunshine to see our shadows. but best of all was time to simply talk and catch up. six…

    2-day walk 08.

…2 days, 30-ish miles walked with my best friend and sister, feeling like we helped to make an impact in the fight against this horrible disease. thanks to our dear family and friends, we raised nearly $3,500. yes, three five zero zero! and donations are still coming in. I think we both agreed this year’s walk was better than last. on the staff’s part, the hotel, the organization and the route will be hard to top. and on our part, or really just mine, I’m not thinking I’ll be laid off running for 3 months! (but I am sitting here now with both feet propped up and under ice). we’ve…
