Just Life

TGIF | Hello September.

can you believe the little boy in that photo will be turning FIVE next week??!!

It’s the first Friday of a new month and you know that that means – a special edition of TGIF!

Thinking about … plans for cool weather making and pairing cropped sweaters with fuller bottoms. I honestly have no idea how this look will look on me, but I’m willing to give it a try. And layering a sweater over a dress seems like a great way to stretch a fall/spring piece into winter. Like why didn’t I think of this before?!

Grateful for … the opportunity to celebrate my niece’s birthday yesterday with a full table of family-who-are-friends.

Paula with my brother

(also for my sister’s amazing baking skills and tres leches birthday cake with blackberries)

Inspired by … all the layering love on Instagram … it’s what got me thinking about the new making ideas ♥ one, two, three and I think this dress might be just the ticket for the bottom layer.

Fun … my mom and I are going to be traveling again soon … as in we leave September 19. We are headed to Montreal for a 12-day cruise around Newfoundland. This will be my longest cruise (thankfully, my mom is a cruise veteran; she and my dad have spent weeks on board before!) and I am looking forward to exploring new places during the day while my bags are unpacked and I’m sleeping in the same bed every night … not to mention Canadian Autumn, sweater weather!!, fine dining, and a field trip to Espace Tricot. I will certainly be wearing my new pullover (it’s blocking!) although maybe not quite as stylishly as Melissa debuted hers yesterday. and if the knitting gods continue to smile on me, I’ll have a new cardigan, too. I’m going to swatch just as soon as press Publish on this post.

I hope you’re looking forward to something new – and fun! – this month – please share in the comments … and have a wonderful weekend!

Another trip! Sounds wonderful. I wish my Mom were still alive…would love to travel with her. Your Fall Making Plans are intriguing… can’t wait to see all the things you make (you are so speedy!!).

how cool another trip! Sweet 🙂 I think I would like a trip like that too. I know you will take lots of photos and share the experience so I await for the return home. I’m thrilled that fall is beckoning!

There *might* be a solo trip to MI to visit the kids this fall. (fingers crossed!)

I too am late to the layering brilliance party … but I will absolutely doing lots of that this fall into winter!

    Have a great weekend!

Tempus fugit and little boys grow up far too fast! You are quite the well-traveled traveler, and I love the intersection of your traveling and making. Glad you’ve got so much to look forward to!

Yes to layering! I just need to make a simple black dress and I will be set for fall layering – oh, and finish the sleeves on that sweater😅

I am definitely digging the cropped sweater and dress look, and I really wish I knew how to sew so I could make myself a drapey linen dress! For now, I guess store-bought will have to do (I have a couple of swingy jersey dresses on their way to me from Old Navy that I think will be good with sweaters for fall).

Your cruise sounds like it will be a lot of fun! The last cruise I was on was on our honeymoon; we decided we wanted to go big, so we did a cruise of the Mediterranean (Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Croatia), and as you’ve noted, it’s a great way to see a lot without having to constantly be packing and unpacking a bag and sleeping in a new bed every night.

One thing I’m really looking forward to this month is cooler temperatures. It’s been chilly enough the past several mornings or a sweater or light jacket, and it’s so lovely to get to work without being a sweaty mess when I get there!

Layering she sez: I layer all the time, i.e., have something with sleeves handy ‘cause I get cold easily…and it’s just occurred to me that I don’t have. a. single. solitary casual dress to my name… Hmmm. I like the yellow sweater, #3 a lot.
And five years for Charlie! Amazing! They grow up too soon!
    Stitch and Knit on!
    Cheers~

That trip sounds lovely. I have a cousin who lived in Newfoundland and I’ve always wanted to visit. I’ve never considered a cruise in the area. That dress pattern you linked to is cute. It has nice but simple lines, a style I like.

I’m a layering person but not sure I’m very fashionable about it! I’ve had my eye on that Felix cardigan / pull over for a bit. I may have to pull the trigger! Your trip with your Mom will be so much fun. I think my parents did that cruise and it was great. Pack your wool though! 🙂

That sounds like a fabulous trip, Mary! Can’t wait to hear/see more about it! I love all the layering looks . . . because layering? That’s MY kind of style!!! 🙂

Oh wow, what a great cruise that would be! (I think… I’ve never been on a cruise.) That is definitely an area on my list. I can’t want for your travel report!!

That cruise looks amazing! You’re going to look so stylish and I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time with your mom. Autumn will be in full swing!
